Leupold STD two-piece bases are the interface between the Mauser FN and Remington 798 receiver and the rings that hold the riflescope: they define the position, height, and alignment of the optic, which determine zero retention under recoil and correct eye relief. The two-piece solution leaves the ejection port unobstructed and reduces weight and bulk compared to a one-piece rail. The matte black finish minimizes glare and is consistent with matte blued or treated firearms.

On the Standard system, the front ring rests on a dovetail mount that rotates into place, while the rear ring is secured by two opposing windage screws. During bore-sighting, the windage screws allow for lateral centering of the optic without consuming the scope's internal adjustment range, leaving it available for fine-tuning; for larger vertical corrections, Leupold recommends the use of shims, keeping the elevation turret free for ballistic compensation. The construction is steel, and the manufacturer recommends the STD system for standard calibers up to .300 Win. Mag. The specified torque settings are 22 in-lb for base-to-receiver screws and 45 in-lb for windage screws.
