The Leupold STD two-piece bases are the interface between the Mauser 98 Large Ring receiver and the rings that hold the scope: they define the position, height, and alignment of the optic, which determines zero retention under recoil and correct eye relief. The two-piece solution leaves the ejection port clear and reduces weight and bulk compared to a one-piece rail. The matte black finish limits reflections and is consistent with matte blued or treated firearms.

On the Standard system, the front ring rests on a dovetail mount that rotates into place, while the rear ring is secured by two opposing windage screws.
