The pierce point jag is the tip that carries the cleaning patch through the bore. This version is specific for calibers from .22 to .243: the calibrated diameter ensures the correct fit between the patch and the rifling, a necessary condition for effective cleaning.

The pointed tip pierces the patch and keeps it centered throughout the stroke, then lets it drop off on its own upon exiting the muzzle: there is therefore no need to remove the patch by hand or pull it back into the bore. The solid brass construction prevents scratches and damage to the barrel.
