The Lee Precision Factory Crimp Die in 7.62x39 Russian caliber is a die dedicated solely to crimping the round, to be mounted as a separate station after the seating die. Separating bullet seating from crimping allows the two operations to be adjusted independently and is the standard choice for those reloading rifle cartridges for hunting and shooting, where the round must withstand recoil, the magazine feeding cycle, and handling.

The die works with a collet system: steel sectors close radially on the case neck and tighten the round onto the bullet with pressure distributed across the entire circumference. Since the crimp is created by the closing of the collet and not by contact between the case mouth and the die opening, the result remains repeatable even when cases are not all the same length, unlike the roll crimp obtained with the seating die. Lee states that a firm crimp increases the bullet's start pressure, makes the pressure curve more uniform, and reduces velocity dispersion, and that the system works even with bullets lacking a cannelure.

Recommended use
